Sport Compact Nights
Held during the August long weekend, bad weather was actually
helpful for attendance at the Sport Compact Nights show as it
was held indoors at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. On July
31, 2004, in its sophomore appearance, the lights-out show featured
approximately 200 vehicles and attracted more than 7,000 spectators.
While Winnipeg was the third stop in a six-city Canadian tour
for the show, it was the best. "Winnipeg has been the most
consistent and successful stop on the tour," Patrick Alcancia,
director of operations for host Team Sport Compact, said. "It
has been the best show to date."
Alcancia credited several factors with the success but said
the item that contributed most was unity. "In a lot of
cities you'll get a lot of crews that won't work together,"
he said. "In Winnipeg, they're all working on their own
but they also all work together. We didn't have to babysit as
much as we usually have to."
Winners from Sport Compact Nights held July 31, 2004,
at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

Cruz in Downtown
While the sun didn't make an appearance
for Cruz in Downtown, rain didn't either. The fifth installment,
held on Aug. 7, 2004, closed seven downtown streets to traffic
and packed them full of autos, auto enthusiasts and auto events.
Organizer John Dyck reported 550 vehicles participated in
the daylong event with more than 300 involved in the opening
parade. Downtown Winnipeg Biz estimated public attendance
to be 40,000. The vehicles and spectators combined to raise
a $6,500 donation to the Sara Riel Foundation, which operates
an apartment block for patients recovering from mental illness.
With the donation, the five-year total donated from the Cruz
in Downtown event to the foundation topped $33,000.
Winners from Cruz in Downtown held August 7, 2004, in downtown
Winnipeg.

Flashback weekend
While the sun didn't make an appearance for the Fabulous 50's
Ford Club of Manitoba's Flashback Weekend car show, rain did.
Luckily, the showers ended in the early morning and didn't
damper the attendance or participation in the city's largest
free car show.
With the show celebrating its 10th year, the club registered
926 vehicles. Betty Lannoo, treasurer for the Fabulous 50's
Ford Club of Manitoba, said there were some vehicles in attendance
that hadn't officially registered and estimated the total
number to be closer to 950. A headcounter from Garden City
Shopping Mall, which opened up an additional parking lot more
than last year's event, estimated the crowd at 12,000.
Lannoo said while she was obviously concerned with the early
morning precipitation the lingering cloud cover did have its
benefits. "I think we lucked out with the weather,"
she concluded. "It would have been a very hot and sticky
day had the sun come out."
The event raised $5,890 for donation to the Rehabilitation
Centre for Children Foundation, with $3,965 raised by silent
auction and $1,925 through a 50/50 draw that was won by Candice
Blair. The foundation supports children with special needs
in Manitoba and surrounding areas.
