LIGHTNING STRIKE: When rare is just a start

STORY: Paul Grigaitis
PHOTOGRAPHY: Douglas Little

Many enthusiasts would be content just to have the one of the world's fastest trucks in their driveway. For Cindy Scott, any pillar of automotive rarity, beauty and power is just a starting line and her 2003 Ford F-150 Lightning SVT is no different.

Scott's Lightning started off as a rarity. Only 4,270 Ford F-150 Lightning SVTs were produced in 2003. The small production numbers didn't hamper the vehicle's ability to capture the world's attention. On Aug. 13, 2003, Guinness World Records, Ltd. officially declared the Lightning "The World's Fastest Production Pickup Truck" after it clocked 237 kilometers per hour (147 mph) at the Ford Michigan Paving Grounds test facilities. Scott wasn't satisfied with a mere rarity; she desired a true singularity.

"People that know about vehicles know that the Lightning is rare," Scott said. "To have a collector's item and then to go out and modify it so they can't ever put it back to original, they just can't comprehend."

The Lightning features a custom fiberglass gauge pod, Autometer Pro-comp ultra-light gauges, and numerous billet accessories throughout. The door handles were shaved and both the tailgate and tonneau operate off of an actuator. Strobes and neon lighting in the engine bay and under-truck LED lights illuminates the truck's aggressive makeover.

Over 450 HP is produced under the hood by a supercharged 5.4 litre V8 with eight pounds of boost, a water-to-air intercooler, a dual-board 57mm throttle body, cold-air induction system, Bassani headers and cat-back exhaust system. 4:10 gears help focus the power to the ground while a digitally managed air ride ensures a smooth ride.

Although it appears impossible, the horsepower under the hood almost pales to the wattage under the roof and tonneau cover. With the help of Advance Performance Auto Sound the Lightning's bed, combine a 23 inch and two 19 inch LCD Sony VEGA television monitors, an Xbox 360 and four 12-inch subs to create a true Cineplex on wheels.

In the cab, she has two seven inch television screens on the sun visors, an Alpine in-dash DVD/LCD screen, and a seven-inch Pioneer DVD/LCD head unit. A pair of six-and-a-half-inch component speakers occupy the doors while four six-and-a-half inch components and two 10-inch subs fill out the cab. Two 300-watt and four 500-watt amplifiers powered by three deep-cycle batteries provide the juice.

"I've got lots of audio," Scott said. "Lots is probably an understatement though."
One of the biggest challenges Scott has faced during the build has had nothing to do at all with the vehicle but instead the role of women in the cruising community. Scott said it's not uncommon to hear remarks such as "take your boyfriend's truck home," while cruising. "Nobody would ever believe it's a girl's truck," Scott said.

However, the outdated chauvinistic attitudes of the few haven't stopped Scott or her Lightning from being properly recognized.

The truck has won several awards at car shows throughout the province including best truck, best modified truck, best modified vehicle, and best engine. "It's won over 10 awards so far."
