ADDING TO PERFECTION: The most sought after car receives a 1400 HP makeover

After five years of searching, Brian Wall knew just what he was looking for.

Shortly after he opened Walls Rod & Custom back in 1996, Wall started looking for a big block 1969 Camaro SS he could revamp to publicize his shop. While he looked at many vehicles over the years, Wall was determined to find a rust-free '69 before he would lay down the money for what he knew would be a major investment. "I was very fussy. There had to be absolutely no rust on the car," he said. "That's what we always deal with here at the shop and I just didn't want to deal with it on my own car."

A year and a half ago, Wall travelled to Los Angeles to check out a number of good-looking 1969 Camaros but found they all had blemishes of one kind or another. While still in California, Wall was looking for more Camaros on the Internet when he found one for sale in Sacramento and immediately realized his trip hadn't been a waste. "I was playing on the computer at the hotel when I came across it and I knew right away that was the one," he said.

After driving for several hours, Wall bought the "hugger orange" big block 396 on the spot after seeing it was completely free of rust, in excellent running condition and hadn't been cut in any way.

Over the years, he had seen plenty of '69 Camaros with the rear wheel wells cut to allow for larger tires. "I wanted something that had not been altered or fooled around with," he said. "I wanted something all original and stock. I definitely didn't want to devalue a car like that."

Wall, who has owned approximately 35 cars over the years, said he always had an eye for the '69 Camaro because it's the cream of the crop and the most sought-after car in the United States. He said he likes the car's unique style, including the body lines along the sides, the contour of the rear wheel wells and the fact the car is a little bit wider than its contemporaries.

"It's little stuff like that that just made the car that much more appealing to work with," he said.

After getting the car to his shop, Wall set to work stripping it down and installed a 540 cubic inch Stoker Brodix motor built by Custom Crankshaft that gives the Camaro more than 1,050 horsepower at the rear wheels. The supercharged car also boasts a state of the art electromotive laptop driven fuel injection system.

"There are not too many cars that are laptop-controlled," said Wall. "You can really, really fine-tune the car to a T. Plus it makes it very street-driveable. I can turn the key and drive it into the city every Sunday night and not too many cars are able to do that with that type of power beneath the hood."

A Mosier 12 bolt differential with 35-spline axles and a Mosier spool for better traction has also been added. The car's new transmission is an ATI Pro Grinder Turbo 400 three-speed with a split shift modifier, a custom-cut high stall and an air shift option. Disc brakes were also added to the rear of the Camaro, which now sits on a set of custom-made Centreline aluminium alloy wheels.

The car's exterior has been painted a custom blue colour but its interior is largely untouched except for the addition of a roll cage and some new gauges.

Wall said he expects the car will race in the low to mid-eight second range in the quarter-mile once some substantial modifications are made over the winter. He said the Camaro has already garnered attention at major car shows in Minnesota and Winnipeg.

"Seeing that I do customized work here and that's what we specialize in, I figured I might as well have a sort of flagship car to promote what we do," he said. "That's why we went to such crazy extents in building something so different."
